Last weekend GSMST's RoboDragons competed in their first FIRST Robotics Challenge "FRC" (big robots) World Championships. They qualified for the World Championship by winning the most prestigious award for first year teams, the "All-Star Rookie Award". The All-Star Rookie award is the first year team version of the "Chairman's Award". The Chairman's Award is the highest award given by FIRST Robotics.
The World Championships were held once again in our own backyard at the Georgia Dome. The championships attract over 20,000 people a year. All the major engineering schools have recruiters on hand with over 11 million dollars of scholarships issued each year exclusively to FIRST Robotics participants. This will be the last year the World Championships will be help in Atlanta. We will have to travel to Saint Louis next year, if we win an invitation.
The team was made up of only juniors and was rather a reunion of GSMST's original robotics team. They made the World Championships their first year with the smaller FTC robots and they did it again this year with the larger FRC robots. Needless to say, I'm particularly proud of this group. They continue to set a the bar high for all subsequent classes to follow.
Our team represented the school in the highest fashion and showed strong performances in each match. In the long run, we finished mid field against the best and most experienced teams in the world. This is an outstanding feat our first time out. Over 350 teams from 20 countries were represented at the tournament.
With such a strong finish in our inaugural year, I know we will continue to show just what students at GSMST are capable of. Please congratulate our junior robotic club members on their outstanding accomplishments. This year's team captain was Jack Ridderhof and the Robotics Club president is Kirsten Lim. Thanks
